Kindle Vella and NaNoWriMo 2021: An Interesting Combination

Check out my first Kindle Vella serial novel, ‘Liberty Calling.’

I’m part of the select group of NaNoRebels that will be writing and editing in November as well as publishing through Kindle Vella during NaNoWriMo 2021 (50,000 words in 30 days challenge). I’ll complete my first serial novel, ‘Liberty Calling,’ on November 7 on Kindle Vella. I’ll be working on my second serial novel, ‘Never Forget’ (stay tuned for the links on my blog and social media). This time I will be writing and editing as I go, as well as publishing. With my first Kindle Vella serial novel, I had already most of it written out and edited, but I did end up adding more as I published episodes weekly.

If you’re curious about how Kindle Vella works, check out my previous post for more information. I will share that it’s been an adventure to publish on this new format. I’ve been learning how to publish and promote while we’re all learning to use this new platform. I’ve gotten a chance to connect with amazing authors and read their stories that I might have not otherwise, including those in the Vella Book Club on Discord and the Kindle Vella Storytellers on Clubhouse, as well as everyone through social media. They have made me excited for my next step in my publishing journey with Kindle Vella, as well as publishing ‘Liberty Calling’ into standard forms (ebook December 7, and physical copies now available on Amazon, which will allow more people to read my story, especially internationally). Check my social media for updates on my reading list.

Order physical copies quickly as there will be shipping delays with holidays.

If you think I’ll be writing 50,000 words in November, I won’t. I plan to pace myself, which will also give me time to also edit. I’ll be making November more like the Camp version. Just some time to motivate me to write and edit, as well as do some virtual sprints with others. I know that NaNoWriMo also helps me keep track throughout the month to get work done, but I also found Kindle Vella does too. With the idea of having an edited episode per week (at least), it’s kept me on track. I’ve also learned that it works best for me to write mostly in the weekends, but when I’m able to, I’ll write a bit during the week. It’s so important to take care of your physical and mental health, especially with these challenges or any writing goals. You have to feel your best to do your best. So don’t pressure yourself to get to a high goal. Just get some work done in November. Some work is an accomplishment. Plus chatting with your fellow authors also helps get those words down too. I really appreciate all the support for my writing, especially from the Kindle Vella authors and writing community.

For my second Kindle Vella serial, I’ve already had some of it planned out previously, as I have plans to make it a TV pilot. Remember that post about how much I found ‘Save The Cat Writes For TV’ helpful. Well, I decided to make it a Kindle Vella serial first. I decided to use to writing books to help me with my NaNo prep this month before starting. I’ve already used that previous Save The Cat ebook to help me get started, I decided to add ‘Save The Cat Writes A Novel’ to evolve my plotting into a serial novel with three seasons.

I also decided to use Beth Revis’ new workbook, ‘Paper Hearts: Fast Draft Workbook’ to get the rest of my NaNo Prep complete. While I have a system that I’ve created from previous NaNo Prep sessions and materials, I find that I continue to involve new methods that work for me. Plus I really enjoy Beth’s writing and her Paper Hearts writing series (look for her work on Amazon, including on Kindle Vella). I’ve found that I like working outside of workbooks in my own physical journal and Google Workplace, partly because of my own system, but also so the workbook can be used multiple times. I won’t give away what’s in the workbook, but I found it helpful as I planned, plotted out my story (including figuring out episodes), and evolved my characters.

I’ve noticed that I’m not the only one in the Kindle Vella author community who is also doing NaNoWriMo as well. Let me know if you’re doing both. I can’t wait to cheer all of us on, as well as support each other’s work. Best wishes everyone on NaNoWriMo 2021, and involved with Kindle Vella. The important part is to write the best story you can. I’m excited to see where our writing adventures go.
