Strive For New Adventures

A friend of mine, when I was in high school, told me that you could experience adventures in life just as much as the ones I read on the pages of my favorite books. It wasn’t until I went to my university, and after I graduated, that I realized how much that held true.

Some times an adventure can just be exploring our own backyard. I don’t mean the backyard of our house, but it could still work. What I’m referring to is the city you live in. Have you ever driven around your city just to look around? Or go downtown, just to walk around? Or stop at a place, and ask to look around because the place looked interesting? I’ve done all these. Some of these, and other experiences, have inspired me to write and made my life a bit more interesting.

For an example, two years ago or so, a friend of mine Bella needed a ride home from the university. As I was driving down Ocean Drive, that included some really nice expensive houses, Bella noticed a greenhouse that was part of house. My first response was “Lets drive by and look at it closer.” So when we got there, Bella looked around and noticed the gate was open. So she went to ask if we could have a chance to walk through the greenhouse. The caretaker actually let us, and explained a bit about the greenhouse. Also gave us a chance to look around the yard of the house. Which made me feel like we walked into a Jane Austen novel. It was a wonderful house with a large yard and beautiful trees but I could picture Elizabeth Bennett walking around reading.

Some times I’ve walked around downtown, near the bay, and just looking at how the weather changed the water. It inspired me to write a few poems. I’ve written a short story based off my experience of going to a resturant on the island. Nature, and the world around us, is just waiting for us to pay attention.

It’s great to walk around taking photographs because you’re able to notice things that you wouldn’t otherwise. It gives you a chance to observe the world around you. Isn’t that what writers do when they write stories? They take their observations from the world to create some thing new.

Have you ever sat down a listened to live music? Its an amazing experience to go to an open mic. You get a chance to hear music that you wouldn’t have normally, sometimes really its really good. There are people right now who are writing songs, and performing them, locally. All they want is someone to hear them… to take a chance and listen to what they have written from their heart and soul. They are given a voice, like writers, to make us realize that we aren’t alone. Plus while you’re listening to music, it’s great to just observe the world around you and see the world from a different perspective.

As much as I want to travel to new places, it can be really expensive. Which makes me value the chances that I can travel, as once and a lifetime amazing experiences. So for now, and always, I want to continue to explore the ever growing world around me. Let it all be an adventure, and create a story worthy to place on the page. We have to live life to give us a springboard to create, no matter what it is.
